Boldt Castle, located near Alexandria Bay, NY in the famed 1000 Islands is once again becoming what it was always meant to be, the premier home and attraction on the St. Lawrence River.

Boldt Castle on Heart Island is the setting for the saddest love story ever told and an important RiverQuest destination. Accessible by water taxi, tour boats and private boat, the castle is open for self-guided tours of its six stories, featuring 120 rooms, tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, and much more. Wander the Castle or visit the Boldt Yacht House on Wellesley Island and see the docked 1892 Kestrel, a 63-foot steam yacht, similar to those popular on the St. Lawrence River at the turn-of-the-century.

History

At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size rhineland castle on Heart Island as a display of his love for his wife, Louise. In January 1904, Boldt commanded to immediately stop all construction, as his beloved Louise had suddenly died. Broken hearted, Boldt never returned to the island, leaving behind the castle and various stone structures as a monument to his love.
